In this engaging interview, I talk to Silvia Pfeiffer, CEO of Coviu. Coviu is a video conferencing platform spun out of the CSIRO. The platform is dedicated to delivering video consultations to patients of private practices in all locations.
Coviu's platform has been extensively tested with with speech pathologists and other health professionals in Australia and America. It is live and you can trial it for free here: www.coviu.com.
In the interview Silvia explains that videoconferencing is very easy to use. You sign up, then set up a link and share it with the person you need to meet. The person clicks the link and waits in a waiting room (just like in the real world). You can choose to record the session and the patient will be prompted to consent to the recording.
There are some Medicare codes that can be used for video consultations and it is anticipated that more will be coming soon.

Opportunities for your private practice
Video consultations will definitely become the way of the future and this modality has huge opportunities for clinicians who want to “go deep” in a particular niche field. This allows you to reach people from any location who can benefit from your specific set of expertise and skills.
Other opportunities include being able to meet people out of hours from any location where you are based (including travel). Think “Clinical Nomad” as a possible way of the future.
Low resistance to the technology
There is surprisingly very little to no resistance from patients who use video consultations. Most people have used Skype or Face Time by now. The tricky part is getting clinicians comfortable with the delivery method. They often find themselves in hospitals and behind fire walls. But there are ways around this.
Every clinician in the future will have a part of their work online in the future. This creates more diversity in terms of how consultations are delivered and opportunities for delivering services using a whole range of technology. This will create efficiencies, flexibility and greater depth of knowledge and service delivery for patients and clients.
