Hello my name is Megan Walker and welcome to the Market Savvy Program. This video series is designed to enhance your knowledge and awareness of effective marketing in your private practice so you can attract, retain and help more patients.
In today’s episode I’m talking about the importance of taking a leadership position in your field.
As a general practitioner, OT, psychologist, physiotherapist, speech therapist, surgeon, geneticist or any other type of clinician, who comes to mind when I ask you “who is a leader in your field?”.
Take a moment to write down who this person is, what are they known for, why did you choose them as a leader and how did they get to this position? Do you like them and are they respected?
Now, you may find that nobody comes to mind or you might have thought of somebody who has notoriety but perhaps you don’t align with all of their values.
Regardless of your answer, there is always more room for others to emerge and be champions for their discipline, patients or cause.
You might ask why would I do this?
And you get to make a lasting impact on your profession and a broader range of people’s lives which is the whole point.
The great news is that you don’t have to ask permission or wait to be appointed to this leadership position. Provider you aren’t bombastic in your approach or overtly step on toes, you can establish your vision and work towards establishing a reputable brand and thought leadership in your space.
There are a number of steps involved, but all are achievable and you could expect to see some powerful results within 18 months time:
- As mentioned, establish your vision – focus on how many people you want to help, the difference you want to make and identify what this will look like
- Put in place plans to work towards your vision
- Develop a marketing strategy with actions to take each month and stick to it. Get help from others to help you achieve the desired outcomes. Stay in your lane and make a few steps each week towards your vision
It also helps if you can establish a process or system that you live by in practice and communicate this to others. This will help you to become known for something.
This might be the Smith Rehabilitation Way or the Smith Progress Method. Just don’t make health claims in the naming of your system. You will also want your system to be backed up by research or evidence so you are aligning with the AHPRA Guidelines.
Then, you can offer to present at conferences, identify key media identities and email them your considered opinion or position on certain topics. You will also want to have your own video series, book or podcast. You may also wish to run your own online programs, group events or seminars.
The choice is yours. So what does your vision for the future look like? What will your legacy be?
And remember you don’t have to ask for permission – this opportunity is here and one of the positions of thought leadership in your field is currently vacant.
